The Dog Days of Summer

The Dog Days of Summer are here! That’s the hottest part of summer, but rather than swelter in silence, why not celebrate with a pet party?

Gather outside in the evening for some socializing among pet owners, complete with leashed pets. Like-minded people will get a chance to get to know one another, which might be useful in encouraging compliance with things like leash laws and clean-up requirements. Maybe someone from the local animal shelter or rescue agency would like to make a few remarks, perhaps about recruiting volunteers. A local hobbyist group might have someone whose dog can give an agility or disc-catching demonstration. Keep it simple in a nod to the heat, with Popsicles for the people and some dog biscuits for the four-legged guests.

Also, this would be a good time to distribute little gifts to the pets. The gesture will resonate with pet owners, just as much as if you had given something to one of their kids. Extreme attachment to one’s pets is a hallmark of the times, and if your community is pet-friendly, chances are good that played at least a part in your residents’ decisions to live there.
